Since I turned 21, I’ve been a freelance writer, content marketer, digital marketing manager, vice president of online sales for an e-commerce brand, and creator of a growing newsletter brand.

I’ve tried A LOT of different things and learned along the way. This article is going to focus on building content from a solopreneur or small brand perspective.

Content Marketing Has a Very Low Barrier to Entry

Let’s think about a grounded example.

We all know about the Kardashians, right?

A large cable channel handed them an opportunity by signing them for a TV show and then came their fame and money.

Now let’s consider The Perkins. They’re a husband and wife team who create content for a massive audience on YouTube. They film footage of their real lives (just like reality television) except their show is free, doesn’t require cable approval, and it’s available the second they hit ‘Upload.’

They have creative control. There’s no hold period of 6 months before episodes air. They decide every element of their business without any contracts or executive producers.

E! Entertainment has a larger audience and more publicity power, so signing with E! might be a better foothold on…
