How to Create a DIY Work Retreat

The normal work week is full of notifications, emails, Slack messages, and regularly scheduled work tasks…plus responsibilities like working out, cleaning your house, and taking care of your kids or pets.

Sometimes the normal day-to-day leaves you feeling tired and you don’t have enough brain space to dive deeper into your work, especially creative work.

This feeling comes up for me a lot during my normal work weeks, which is why I started planning “work retreats.” Unlike a corporate retreat where you’re socializing and bonding with peers, the goal of a DIY work retreat is to focus on your work in an ideal setting with zero distractions.

Planning regular work retreats accelerates your productivity. When you focus for an entire weekend on your business or creative project, tremendous progress can be made. You can also use the time to gain clarity — where is your business heading? What’s the roadmap for how you will get everything done? What’s been working and not working in your business and how can you make changes to resolve problems?

The goal of a work retreat is whatever you need it to be. If you need collaboration, bring your business besties along for the ride.
